Portugal - Past & Present

January 28 - February 8, 2027

Your small group custom adventure begins in Porto with a Fado experience and takes you to Little Portuguese Tibet and to an ancient Roman settlement, touching on the path of the Camino de Santiago. You’ll walk through the villages of Monsanto, built into boulders, and to the medieval village of Monsaraz and its castle. Sampling port wine and learning to cook some of Portugal’s flavorful cuisine is an integral part of this extraordinary journey.

Cost based on double occupancy is $4918. 

 

3 nights in Porto
Jan. 28: Day 1 
You’ll be met at the airport in Porto and taken to our hotel before enjoying a welcome dinner at a local restaurant. Overnight in Porto at Moov Hotel Porto Centro.
Jan. 29: Day 2 
After breakfast, we’ll embark on a morning walking tour followed by an afternoon food and wine tour. You'll experience typical Portuguese Fado music in the evening. Dinner and overnight in Porto at Moov Hotel Porto Centro.
Jan. 30: Day 3 
Following breakfast, you'll see the Duoro Valley on a wine tour and river cruise.
Dinner and overnight in Porto at Moov Hotel Porto Centro.

2 nights in Sistelo
Jan. 31: Day 4 
After breakfast, you'll have a bit of time to wander Porto's old city along the Duoro River before heading north for barefoot on the beach pause, and on to our overnight destination: Luna Arcos Hotel Nature & Spa. Dinner at Flume Restaurante & Bar on the Vez River.
Feb. 1: Day 5 
After breakfast, we’ll visit the village of Sistelo (Little Portuguese Tibet) and view the impressive terraces of Sistelo. Dinner and overnight in Sistelo at Luna Arcos Hotel Nature & Spa.


1 night in Coimbra
Feb. 2: Day 6 
We'll meet our driver at 9:30 am to meander our way to Coimbra, stopping at the Santa Barbara Gardens in Braga, an historic park in Moinhos de Jancido, and for lunch at a typical "lunch of the day" cafe. Dinner at Passaporte Coimbra and overnight at Hotel Astoria.

1 night in Monsanto
Feb. 3: Day 7 
We'll visit an ancient Roman settlement after breakfast and step onto a piece of the Camino de Santiago before driving to historic Monsanto, a village with the distinction of being a living museum. We'll take an afternoon walk through the village to the viewpoint of Petiscos & Granitos, and to the castle of Monsanto. Dinner and overnight in Monsanto at Quinta da Pedra Grande or similar.
 
2 nights in Monsaraz
Feb. 4: Day 8 
After breakfast, we’ll explore the historic village of Marvão before continuing on to Monsaraz, where we’ll take an afternoon walk to see the Monsaraz Monoliths. Overnight at Casa Saramago or similar.
Feb. 5: Day 9

After breakfast, we’ll visit historic Monsaraz, with a possible late afternoon swim.

2 nights in Sintra/Lisbon
Feb. 6: Day 10
After breakfast, we’ll drive to Sintra and check into our hotel, and enjoy lunch before a visit to Sintra Castle/Pena National Palace/Castle of the Moors, Sintra old town center, and the Palace Regaleira.

Dinner and overnight at Quintas Das Murtas B&B or similar.

Feb. 7: Day 11

You’ll have some free time after breakfast before having some fun in a Portuguese cooking class.

Feb. 8: Day 12 
Your final morning includes breakfast and airport transfers to Humberto Delgado Airport.  For international flights, you should plan to arrive at Lisbon's Humberto Delgado Airport 3 hours before your flight. The airport is approximately 30 minutes from our hotel.

Required for Entry 

  • Passport with at least two blank pages, six months’ validity at the time of arrival.

  • There are no current visa requirements for the countries we'll be visiting.


Health

  • There are no required vaccinations for Portugal, but we recommend you check with the CDC website prior to travel.

  • Please show proof of health insurance for the dates of this tour, including emergency evacuation insurance. The following companies are a few that carry medical travel insurance: Allianz Travel Insurance, Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection, World Nomads Travel Insurance, Squaremouth Travel Insurance, and Trawick International. There are many others.

Other

We highly recommend that you purchase trip cancellation insurance. There is an insurance called Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR). This can be purchased from the above insurance companies. 

COSTS

  • Tour cost is based on double occupancy. 

  • The single supplement fee for this trip is $1200.

  • A 25% deposit is required in order to hold your space on this trip. 

  • Payment in full must be received no later than August 31, 2026.
